MEET NICK

A Kentucky Story

There's a particular kind of resolve that comes from growing up in the hills of Southeastern Kentucky. It doesn't announce itself — it shows up when it matters. Nick Wilson has spent his whole life proving he has it, and now he's ready to bring that same tenacity to every corner of the Commonwealth as Kentucky's next Secretary of State.

Roots in Whitley County: Nick was born and raised in Williamsburg, one of five children in a family that knew hardship firsthand. When his parents divorced, his grandmother stepped in to help raise Nick and his siblings. It wasn't an easy childhood, but it was a Kentucky childhood — full of family, faith, and the quiet expectation that you take care of your own. Nick became the first person in his family to graduate from college, earning a political science degree from the University of Kentucky before heading to the University of Alabama School of Law.

A Loss That Redirected a Life: While Nick was in law school, his mother lost her life to a drug overdose. It was a devastating blow — and a turning point. Rather than let that grief define him, Nick let it refocus him, coming home to Whitley County to serve as a public defender, standing in courtrooms for people other lawyers often overlooked, with the opioid epidemic at the center of his work. In January 2019, he moved to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, continuing that fight for justice from the other side of the courtroom. That path — as both defender and prosecutor — gave Nick a firsthand understanding of how Kentucky's institutions can serve, or fail, its people.

An Unlikely Detour: In late 2018, in the middle of building that career, Nick did something unexpected: he applied for CBS's Survivor. Cast on Season 37, Survivor: David vs. Goliath, he was written off early by other players as laid-back and unassuming — a mistake on their part. He built quiet, one-on-one alliances that carried him to the end, winning the title of Sole Survivor without a single vote ever cast against him. But the fame was never the point. As soon as the cameras stopped rolling, Nick was back in the Whitley County Courthouse, doing the work.

From the Courthouse to the Capitol: In November 2021, Nick ran for Kentucky's 82nd House District, covering Whitley and part of Laurel County. The people of the district already knew him — and trusted him enough to run unopposed in both the primary and general election. Nick took office in January 2023 and was returned to Frankfort again in 2024 and 2026, both times without opposition. In the House, he has served as Vice Chair of the Families & Children Committee, plus the State Government, Judiciary, Tourism & Outdoor Recreation, and Licensing, Occupations, & Administrative Regulations committees — along with the Pro-Life Caucus, Kentucky Sportsmen's Caucus, and Kentucky History Caucus.

Family and Faith: Nick is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin. He and his wife Grisel, a native of Danville, have been married since 2020 and have one child. Above all, Nick considers himself a product of Whitley County — shaped by the people who raised him, the community that believed in him, and the chance to help make it better.
